Issue a Credit Memo

When returning money to a client, it is necessary to issue a credit memo to document the transaction accurately.

Credit Memo from the Operating Retainer

To issue a credit memo:

  1. Access the Matters section by clicking on it from the left navigation panel.
  2. On the Matters screen, double-click on the matter and scroll down to view its details.
  3. Navigate to the Banking section from the navigation panel.
  4. On the Banking screen toolbar, click on the Action icon then select Credit Memo.
  5. On the Credit Memo screen, verify the chosen bank account or choose the relevant account from the drop-down menu.
  6. From the Date field’s drop-down, click the credit memo date.
  7. Confirm the Amount field matches the Available Credit field and reflects your intended credit amount.
  8. Enter the Payee recipient of the payment, and if applicable, tick Remember Payee.
  9. From the Type field’s drop-down, click the credit.
  10. From the Method field’s drop-down, click the credit method. If you need to print checks, you can utilize this feature to facilitate the check-cutting process.
  11. In the Memo field’s drop-down, select the relevant memo from the options or manually enter one. This Memo will be visible on the printed check.
  12. In the Memo2 field, enter an internal note if desired.
  13. In the top right corner, click SaveWarning message reads: You are allocating outgoing funds to an account normally used for incoming funds. Do you want to continue?
  14. Click Yes. The system saves the credit memo and displays it in the respective matter’s Transactions tab for your records.  If you selected To be Printed, you can print the check from your operating bank.
