Billing By Task Rate

When billing by task rate, you establish rates for specific tasks, and these rates are then recorded on timecards.

Before configuring task rates, it’s essential to review the Rate Levels to ensure they align with your firm’s requirements.

Set Task Rates

To set a default rate for a specific task:

  1. From the left navigation panel, click Setup.
  2. From the Setup left navigation, click List Items.
  3. From the tabs atop the List Items screen, click Task.
  4. Take the appropriate actions on the Task screen:
    • New Task
      1. From the toolbar beneath the tabs, click Add. The Add Task screen opens.
      2. In the Name field, enter a task name.
      3. In the Code field, enter a task code, if desired.
      4.  In the Description field, enter a description, if desired.
      5. From the Rate Setting Type field’s drop-down, click Flat or Hourly.
      6. In the Rate field, enter the rate in either whole dollars or dollars and cents, as applicable.
      7. In the Default field, click the Level you want to set as the default for this task. Firms typically use Level 1, but it is not mandatory. The applicable Level field populates with your entered rate.
      8. To add rates to additional levels, enter their amounts in their respective Level fields.
      9. In the lower right corner, click Save.
        The Task screen updates to display your task.
    • Existing Task
      1. Either double-click the task or single-click the task to highlight it, then from the toolbar beneath the tabs, click Edit.
      2. On the Edit Task screen, add rates to unused Level fields or edit rates in Level fields, as applicable, entering them in either whole dollars or dollars and cents.
      3. In the lower right corner, click Save.
        The Task screen updates. If you changed the task’s default rate, the Rate column on the far right displays the new rate.

Apply Task Rates

For All Timecards

The timekeeper rate has no impact on any timecard entry.

  1. From the left navigation panel, click Setup.
  2. From the Setup left navigation, click Firm Settings.
  3. From the tabs atop the Firm Settings screen, Click Financial.
  4. Atop the screen in the Billing Settings section, from the Apply Rate field’s drop-down, click Task.
  5. In the upper right corner, click Save.
    Task rates apply to timecards.

For an Individual Matter’s Timecards

Timekeeper rate has no impact on the matter’s timecard entry.

  1. From the left navigation panel, click Matters.
  2. On the Matters screen, single-click the matter to highlight it, then click Edit.
  3. From the bottom of the Matter’s left navigation, click Settings.
  4. From the tabs atop the Settings section, click Billing.
  5. In the Apply Rate field’s drop-down, click Task.
  6. In the upper right corner, click Save. Task rates apply to the matter’s timecards.
