Open API allows your firm to connect NextGen with external third-party tools—such as accounting platforms, document management systems, CRMs, calendaring apps, and business intelligence tools like Power BI—through a secure, bi-directional data sync. Instead of relying on pre-built integrations, your development team (or a third-party developer) can build custom integrations tailored to your firm’s workflows.
Enabling Open API
- Log in to your NextGen account as an administrator.
- Navigate to Setup by clicking on profile icon located on top right corner.
- Click on Apps.
- Scroll down to the API Integrations section. You will see the Open API card with an OFF toggle.
- Toggle Open API to ON.
- Click Redirect to open the ProfitSolv Developer Portal in a new browser tab.
Developer Portal Overview
After enabling Open API and signing in, you will land on the Developer Portal dashboard.
The portal is organized into the following sections:
- Dashboard — KPI metrics including Total API Calls, Avg Response Time, Success Rate, and Rate Limit Rules
- Logs — Detailed log of all API calls made, including data sent, updated, or deleted
- Apps — Manage all your created applications, API keys, and permissions
- Guide — Full API documentation with endpoint details and example values
- Schema — Data schemas showing all available fields for each API
- Rate Limits — View peak/off-peak schedules and endpoint-specific quotas
Creating an Application
To create an application:
- In the Developer Portal, click Apps in the left sidebar, then click + Create App.
- Fill in the Name field (e.g., the name of the tool you are integrating with).
- Add a Description of the integration’s purpose (e.g., “To sync my Accounts Payable bills”).
- Enter the Redirect URI (required) and Website URL. Your developer will know what to enter here.
- Scroll down to configure Permissions / Scopes.
- Click Create app to generate your API credentials.
- (Optional) Upload an app icon. This appears only in the Developer Portal—not in NextGen.
You can create multiple apps for different integrations. There is no limit on the number of apps you can configure.
Configuring Permissions (Scopes)
During app creation, you will be asked to select permissions (scopes) for each data area. This controls what the connected application is allowed to do with your data.
How permission selection works:
- Selecting the main checkbox for a data area (e.g., Activity, Client) automatically checks Read, Write, and Delete.
- You can uncheck Delete to allow only Read + Write.
- You can further uncheck Write to allow Read-only access.
- Permissions can be updated at any time from the application detail page.
API Keys and OAuth Authentication
After creating an app, the portal generates your client credentials.
- Client Key — Your public identifier. Can be safely included in client-side code. Use the copy button for convenience.
- Client Secret — A confidential key that must never be shared with unauthorized individuals or committed to version control. Use only in server-side code.
Below the credentials, you will find the OAuth Authentication Guide with endpoint URLs and step-by-step instructions for:
- Sending an authorization request to the ProfitSolv OAuth endpoint
- Exchanging the authorization code for access and refresh tokens
- Using tokens to authenticate subsequent API calls
